Hey Ted - can I suggest you create some test renders of your scene with the matte painting and post for feedback, as my instincts are you may need to revisit the style of your matte painting when it compares with your models - I have a feeling your matte painting may be a little too 'impressionist' and painterly but we'd need to see the various elements working together to be sure :). You've got the time, so let's see some render tests :)
