In this exercise I experimented with various poses for the already rigged model. I tried out various poses from mostly sports while still trying to remain varied to even a knight duel for further experimentation. I had pose not just the limbs but also fingers to add details to the character, adjust the neck, tilt their head to detail the posture and act. Make it seem more lifely. I also chose the poses because I felt there was some ambiguity to the expression and action of the character. Is he running and excising or running in fear?

ReplyDeleteHey Tedward,
I like your final buildings - your orthographs communicate them nice and clearly. They're nicely shaped, and they've got sufficient detail to stop them from being 'blobs'. I like lots of your thumbnails too - there's a lot of illustrative charm and fun going on here. I don't like the angle of the final concept painting; we just feel very far away and disconnected when I think - given how welcoming and appealing your area is - we should be 'on the ground' and having a more human point-of-view. In simple practical terms, if you drop the camera down, we're going to see less of the matte painting etc, which will make your life a little more straight-forward in terms of blending all the elements together. At the moment, your buildings are squished to the bottom of the composition and that pink sky and band of green trees is very dominant. If you put us down on the ground, I think the buildings will communicate as 'architecture' much more immediately. My instinct is that you should consider block-modelling your shapes and using a camera in Maya to work out some new compositions that make better use of what's important in this scene.
Finally, I'm still not 100% sure what your buildings are surfaced with; feels like there are opportunities here to really embrace the idea of woven effects and interlacing and ribbing etc - all the different ways that you might find to mirror and emulate the 'woven/wollen' qualities associated with your artist - I'm not suggesting that your surfaces ARE wool, I'm suggest you find some surfaces that suggest it accordingly:

Short version: I like your buildings (what is their function?), but you need to reconsider your 'view', because a) it's diminishing the important stuff and b) it's going to create difficulties in terms of matching all that painting to the digital sets. Consider getting into Maya and block-modelling to play around with better (and lower) angles and views. Finally, as you start thinking about texturing, you should give additional thought to the surfaces of your various domes and how you might communicate 'knitting/weaving' through them.
